The itinerary

Day 1

Arrive at Glasgow International airport. Meet Tour manager and have breakfast at airport before boarding coach for transfer to Govan area. Visit Govan Old Parish Church, Govan Stones and other local points of interest, and meet with member of the Iona Community.

Depart Govan and continue to Oban, stopping for a visit to Kilmartin Museum & standing stones.

Overnight: OBAN

Day 2

Depart hotel and embark with coach on the Oban-Craignure ferry this morning. Visit historic Duart Castle before transferring to Fionnphort for the foot passenger ferry to Iona.

After settling into your accommodation, enjoy an afternoon pilgrimage walk to St Columba Bay.

Overnight: IONA

Day 3

Morning service at Iona Abbey.

The rest of the day available for local sightseeing with tour manager including a visit to the Iona Heritage Centre, St. Oran's Chapel, Reilig Odhrain, St. Martin's Cross. Optional walk to Martyrs Bay or boat trip to Staffa Island.

Overnight: IONA

Day 4

Depart Iona and take the ferry from Mull back to Oban.

Continue journey into the Highlands travelling via Loch Ness and stopping for a visit to Urquhart Castle.

Overnight: INVERNESS

Day 5

Depart after breakfast a full day's exploration of ancient Pictish sites to the north of Inverness. Visit the Tarbat Discovery Centre and standing stones of Portmahomack, Hilton of Cadboll, and Shandwick.

Day 6

Depart Inverness and travel south through the central highlands, stopping en route to visit the carved stones of St. Vigeans, Miegle Museum, Aberlemno Stones and the monastic round tower of Abernethy. Stop in Brechin, time permitting. (Nb Michael has suggested a stop at Scottish Crannog Centre at Loch Tay today)

Continue to St Andrews to check in to your hotel.

Overnight: ST. ANDREWS

Day 7

This morning visit St. Andrews Cathedral & Museum and St. Andrews Castle.

Early afternoon pilgrimage walk in St. Andrews.

Remainder of day at leisure.

Overnight: ST. ANDREWS

Day 8

Depart after breakfast for a day of local sightseeing in and around the pretty seaside town of St. Andrews, home to Scotland's most ancient university. Visit the nearby Culdee caves where Celtic monks lived in isolation, and the picturesque village of Pittenweem.

Day 9

Depart St. Andrews this morning and travel south of the border toward Lindisfarne.

On the way visit the ancient settlement of Edin's Hall Broch. Proceed toward Holy Island.

On arrival visit the Lindisfarne Centre & Lindisfarne Priory.

Overnight: HOLY ISLAND

Day 10

Today will be a full day of activities on Holy Island. After 8am communion at St. Mary's, meet with a member of the Community of Aidan & Hilda or the Northumbrian Community. Enjoy a walking tour of the island from the end of the causeway to Lindisfarne Priory.

Overnight: HOLY ISLAND

Day 11

After some quiet time for reflection, depart Holy Island and return to Scotland, stopping for a visit to visit Melrose Abbey and spend time exploring the 7th century Celtic-Northumbrian Christian tradition rooted there with St. Cuthbert. Continue with a visit to the Dere Street Roman Road and the famous Rosslyn Chapel.

Later this afternoon, check in to you hotel

Day 12

Depart after breakfast for a visit to the National Museum of Scotland . This afternoon, tour Edinburgh Castle including a visit to St. Margaret's Chapel, and then walk down the Royal Mile to St. Giles's Cathedral for a visit.

Overnight: Edinburgh

Day 13

Depart today for a visit to Inchcolm Abbey on beautiful Inchcolm Island in the Firth of Forth, arriving on the Maid of the Forth Ferry.

Remainder of day free for independent activities.
