Blog > 2022 A Great Year to visit Britain

The last couple of years have been tough for tourism, with a heavily restricted international travel industry and constantly changing regulations. The UK tourism sector has had to contend with more than its fair share of restrictions, and the dramatic decline in our international visitor numbers tells its own story.

Nevertheless, we commence 2022 with greater cause for optimism.

Currently, fully vaccinated travellers to the UK no longer need to take a pre-departure test, and we are increasingly confident that the requirement to test on arrival will also soon be removed - along with the majority of other COVID-19 restrictions. Compared to the majority of European countries, the UK is considerably freer and more open; omicron infections are in decline, and vaccination levels are high.

There are some special events to look forward to in 2022. This year, it will be our Queen's Platinum Jubilee, when Her Majesty the Queen will become the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after an incredible 70 years of service. A big highlight will be the Queen's Birthday Parade (Trooping the Colour) with over 1,400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians coming together in the traditional parade to mark the Queen's official birthday, usually held on the second Saturday in June.

The Commonwealth Games in Birmingham will, we hope, be another important showcase for the UK, with the potential to raise the profile of England's vibrant 'second city' and the characterful West Midlands region, cradle of the Industrial Revolution.

For those who are passionate about the countryside and rural life, June 2022 will mark the 200th anniversary of the Royal Highland Show, with the return of this magnificent showpiece event after an absence of two years. An opportunity to experience and celebrate the very best of Scotland's food, farming and rural life in the spectacular city of Edinburgh.

2022 is a very special year for fans of the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, marking the 150th anniversary of his birth. The popularity of his most famous pieces, such as the Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis and The Lark Ascending, is at an all-time high, with radio polls consistently voting them as listeners' favourites. His Symphony No.5 is one of the most popular of British symphonies with the Romanza theme having voted as one of the 'World's Most Beautiful Melodies'. The Ralph Vaughan Williams Society will be keeping music lovers up to date on the year-long programme of concerts and events forming part of RVW 150. No doubt some of his works will feature prominently at the BBC Proms, the world-famous eight-week summer season of classical music concerts and other events held annually in the Royal Albert Hall and other venues. The famous Last Night performances are hugely popular with regular 'prommers' and TV & radio audiences.

So 2022 has much to offer the UK visitor in terms of history, pageantry, culture, sport, city experiences and rural adventures. A great time to visit us again. We look forward to seeing you!
